City Hall Marks 20 Years at 515 Clark Ave.
AMES, Iowa – Ames City Hall is observing its 20th anniversary at 515 Clark Ave., and all Ames residents welcome to attend the celebration. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, cake will be served in the front lobby of Ames City Hall. A brief program will be held at 11:30 a.m., and participants are welcome to take self-guided tours of the building throughout the afternoon.
“It seems hard to believe two decades have passed since we opened the doors to City Hall. The building has been a tremendous asset to the community and served the residents well these past 20 years,” said Ames Mayor Ann Campbell.
In 1988, Ames residents approved a $6.85-million bond referendum to fund the purchase and rehabilitation of the former Ames High School and Central Junior High School building into a new city hall. By utilizing the vacated building, the City of Ames was able to consolidate departments from four downtown buildings into one location.
The new facility opened with a two-day dedication/open house on April 28-29, 1990, which was coordinated by the “Celebrate Ames Committee.” The event was attended by hundreds of Ames residents and included presentations by the Ames Municipal Band, elementary, middle school and high school musicians; and dozens of arts groups.
